Admission Requirements
Engineering Technology and Construction Management Majors
Students interested in declaring majors in the Department of Engineering Technology and Construction Management must meet the general admission requirements for UNC Charlotte.
Engineering Majors
Students interested in declaring majors in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, or Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science must meet the general admission requirements for UNC Charlotte. In addition to the general admission criteria, Engineering majors are expected to meet the following requirements:
- A grade of C or better in all high school math courses based on final high school transcript
- Completion of Pre-Calculus, although Calculus is preferred
- A math course in the last year of high school prior to graduation (grade 12 or 13 depending on the high school)
The typical average Math SAT and weighted GPA of admitted engineering first-year students are 615 and 3.8, respectively.
Engineering is a rigorous program of study. Students without a solid mathematics background, including Calculus, are more likely to place into Pre-Calculus, take five or more years to graduate, or risk not completing an engineering degree due to inadequate preparation.
Students who wish to be engineering majors but do not meet the requirements will be admitted to UNC Charlotte as an undeclared student (UCOL) in the University College. These students may be considered for admission to the College of Engineering as sophomores by completing the first-year engineering plan of study with a 2.5 cumulative GPA (3.0 cumulative GPA for Mechanical Engineering).
Dual-Enrolled and Early College High School Students
High school students who are also taking college courses while enrolled in high school will apply online through the Future 49er Web portal as incoming First-Year Students. Admission decisions will be based on the requirements listed above. Dual enrolled and early college high school students are admitted as new first-year students – not as transfer students – independent of the number of college transfer credits earned prior to graduation from high school. To see how dual enrollment credits will transfer to UNC Charlotte, see the Transfer Credit Advisor.
